Management of Voice Disorders
Voice problems are experienced by as much as 10 percent of the
population, according to the National Center for Voice and Speech.
Given our lifestyles, work demands, and dietary habits, it is not
unusual for one to experience vocal changes. Persons with laryngopharyngeal
reflux, vocally demanding occupations, and alcohol and/or tobacco
use are most likely to experience voice problems.
In our work with swallowing disorders, we often see signs during
endoscopy that are consistent with reflux irritation, usually accompanied
by patient complaints of vocal changes, vocal fatigue, and globus
sensation. Changes in the integrity of vocal cord and arytenoid
appearance and movement are also sometimes noted. These findings
lead us to recommend evaluation by an otolaryngologist, or ear,
nose, and throat doctor (ENT). In doing so, we have found a shortage
of SLPs who can provide the much needed follow-up voice management
services.
Now, building on our years of dysphagia services, SDX offers voice
management services. Our expert voice therapists use state-of-the-art
ATMOS medical equipment to evaluate and treat voice problems. Stroboscopy
is also used in ongoing vocal therapy, providing biofeedback and
directly measuring patient progress. Trained in rigid and flexible
(oral and nasopharyngeal) endoscopy according to ASHA guidelines,
our therapists conduct a thorough voice evaluation utilizing stroboscopy
and work with ENT physicians to form an appropriate treatment plan.
For laryngeal surgery candidates, pre-surgical voice therapy is
imperative to eliminating abusive vocal behaviors in order to achieve
optimal post-surgical outcomes.
